The middle path between the grind and a full stop

Barista FIRE is the middle path (the name comes from keeping a part-time job — famously for the health insurance): you've saved enough that a bit of light work covers today's bills, while your invested pot keeps growing toward full retirement on its own. It takes a lot of the pressure off without needing the full FIRE number up front.

This works out whether you're at that point yet: put in your age, what you've invested and your target, and see whether your pot can carry the retirement side while part-time income handles the rest. Try it, and if you're not quite there, nudge the numbers — Barista FIRE often arrives years earlier than full FIRE, which is rather the point.

Common questions

What is Barista FIRE?
It's semi-retirement: enough invested that part-time work covers current expenses while your portfolio grows to fund full retirement later. Less saved up front than full FIRE, more freedom than a full-time job.
How is it different from Coast FIRE?
Close cousins. Coast FIRE means you've saved enough to stop saving (your pot coasts to the target) but still work to cover bills. Barista FIRE usually implies deliberately downshifting to part-time. The maths above is the same test either way.
